Upon arriving in Vietnam Robert was assigned Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. While Robert was at Fire Support Base C-2 and 5 kilometers north northwest of Cam Lo the base was fired upon by hostile forces using mortar fire.
Robert died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body. Four Marines died as a result of hostile mortar fire.
Survived by his parents, Paul and Eula Gable of General Delivery, Kylertown, PA.
